‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’: Kenneth Branagh Joins Sequel With Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt & Stanley Tucci Officially Back

Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt in ‘The Devil Wears Prada’Disney

Production is in full swing on 20th Century Studios’ long-awaited The Devil Wears Prada 2 with the core four of Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci officially announced by Disney, but there’s a plus one: Oscar winner Kenneth Branagh, who’ll play the husband to Streep’s ice queen fashion magazine editor, Miranda Priestly. You’ll remember from the first movie Priestly confesses that all is not well in the state of Denmark with her better half; it’s hard to be her.

Great timing here for 20th Century Studios in regards to the ultimate release of this movie on May 1 next year: The fashion industry is now in an era where Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour recently stepped down after 37 years (it’s been rumored that the original author of The NeYork Times bestseller, Lauren Weisberger, was inspired by Wintour, whom she was the personal assistant to). In addition, romantic comedies are finding a way (Anyone But You) in this post pandemic box office, and the original 2006 movie was a big destination for female moviegoers grossing close to $125 million U.S./Canada and over $326 million worldwide.

The sequel is reportedly about Priestly facing the headwind decline of the print industry (did that ever roll up the runways’ red carpets?). You’ll remember the first movie follows Hathaway’s earnest, yet sharp assistant Andy Sachs as she’s baptized by fire by Priestly and her second ferocious assistant Emily played by Blunt. There’s also a great romantic sub-plot involving Andy torn between two dudes, the shaggy, non-industry, great grill-cheesemaking Nate (Entourage‘s Adrian Grenier) and a fellow fashion industry colleague Christian Thompson played by Simon Baker.

Aline Brosh McKenna, the writer who adapted the first movie, is back along with the original film’s director David Frankel, and original producers, Forrest Gump Best Picture Oscar Winner Wendy Finerman, and Karen Rosenfelt.

The Devil Wears Prada was nominated for two Oscars: for Streep as Best Actress and Patricia Field’s Costume Design.
