On the morning of May 6 (Vietnam time), Met Gala 2025 – Vogue magazine’s annual event dubbed the “Oscar of fashion” took place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (USA).

The Met Gala has long been considered the most glamorous and dramatic fashion night in the world – where the red carpet becomes a stage for stars to showcase daring haute couture outfits.

But in 2025, the event will go beyond visual appeal and take on a deeper meaning with the theme: “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.”

Diana Ross made waves on the 2025 Met Gala red carpet with a gorgeous white dress with a train that stretched all the way down the steps. This theme explores black fashion, specifically delving into the tradition of Black Dandyism.

The concept originated from the image of “luxury slaves” in Europe dressed in lavish costumes to serve the aristocracy, to the way black gentlemen used fashion as a tool to assert their identity and status since the 18th century.

From the sharp suits of activist Frederick Douglass to Dapper Dan’s iconic Harlem atelier, the exhibition explores how fashion has become a weapon, an identity, and an act of resistance. The main inspiration comes from the book Slaves to Fashion (2009) by scholar Monica L. Miller.

This is also the first time in more than two decades that the exhibition’s theme focuses on men’s fashion.

This year’s co-chairs include Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams and Anna Wintour, with LeBron James serving as honorary chairman – a combination that epitomizes the intersection of fashion, culture and activism.

In a world where menswear, especially black menswear, is often overlooked, “Superfine” is a fresh and necessary lens. In 2025, it is the boldest and most meaningful fashion statement yet.

The Met Gala is a fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, held annually on the first Monday in May, since 1948.

Last year, the event raised $26 million as the museum’s main fundraiser of the year.
